Double Get Well

My sporadic blogging is bringing you two cards this morning.

My husband needed a Get Well Card for co-worker large enough for a group to sign.  This is what I finally settled on, but sometimes the design process is so taxing.

Let me walk you through my day yesterday... 

My first thought was to make a card similar to this one. This particular card is one of my favorites. It is a one-layer all-over  9 inch by 4 inch.  One of the things I like most about this card is that the flowers continue to the back of the card. (Flowers and words by Hero Arts)

After I stamped on the white card, I couldn't find anything to like about it.  I discovered this stamp set that I had to have, wasn't what I thought it would be.  I don't even think I like it at all now.  Not only was I going to have to color all those leaves, I just didn't like the flat monochromatic scheme. I set it aside.

So, it was time for Design B.

I thought about just putting a panel of the stamped leaved on the front of a card. I thought I'd bring in more color.
I love using Prismacolor pencils on dark  card stock. My favorite is dark brown. I like to add white highlights into anything colored on a dark background, because I can --you just can't do that on white paper-- and because I like the contrast.

I first stamped the message on the Kraft paper and cut it out with and oval Nestabilities die cut.  When I decided to cut a mat just a little bigger I realized that I didn't have the size I needed.  When I bought the Nestabilities Ovals, I was trying to be practical and didn't get both sets.  I didn't have what I needed so, I tried to cut it out... didn't like that either.  I can cut pretty straight, but I'm still no match for a die cut.  I finally settled on this label tag thing.

I finished the card and looked back at looked back at the mess on my desk and it was then that I got the idea to work with the first card a little more. I added a little glitter as a final touch.  Just a little. ; )

He chose the first card and it's my favorite too.

The second card will go up for sale along with almost three hundred cards I'm trying sell... I now have a page on Facebook Joyful Heart Art and I'm uploading them to my Flickr account in case someone interested in purchasing the cards isn't on Facebook.

I'm working on Mother's Day cards (gasp) ... Yes, It's that time already!

I didn't look at this picture on the computer before I mailed the card. I'm not happy with the picture, but, I MAILED the card!!!!! :) See I do mail cards and I'm just pointing that out for someone who recently picked on me twice about that. ( and you know who you are!)

I need to make more masculine cards. My son needed to send a thank you card so I had to whip one up. I didn't have any cards appropriate for him. Fortunately, the image was already colored.

As a way to build my stash, I'm challenging myself to make manly cards this week. I would love it you would to join me. All you have to do is make a card suitable for a man/boy to give or get. Simple enough?

Snoopy and New Blog Banner!

Come and take a look at my new banner. Beth, my very talented friend once again created magic in the form of a new banner for the The Card Castle.

Here is a card that is fairly simple, but I really like it. The card is made from brown card stock which is different for me. I usually make all my cards from white or cream card stock.

I started my card making addiction by making cards featuring Snoopy and the Peanuts gang. I used to draw Snoopy back then and each card took forever! I wish I knew someone who had saved one of my cards but that was close to 30 years ago that I made the first one. (which can't be since I'm only 26.) I'm curious to see what it would look like now. It shouldn't surprise you that my first stamp set was of the Peanuts gang mounted on those foam blocks. I remounted all of those stamps on wood and I still use them occasionally. I'll have to do a Snoopy week sometime because I have a collection of Snoopy (and Peanuts) stamps.

I need to get going to the post office to mail a couple of things this morning. A few members of my hubby's family are flying in and will be here later today. I think I might finish decorating the mantle... just for fun! Have a blessed day!

Rest in the Shadow of the Almighty

The current Salt Faith Challenge is Comfort in Suffering. The first verse I thought about was 2 Corinthians 1: 3 and 4.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.

I would love to say that I'm comforted by the thought that my sufferings might be a blessing to someone else in the future, but to be honest, with when I'm in the midst of suffering, I don't think about comforting others. I know that's bad, but it's true. I don't mean to be selfish, but I tend to be focused on getting thru my current trial. Later maybe looking back, I can remember what it was like and guide someone else thru it.

Actually this challenge sent me to my scripture stamps to see what I could come up with to make a card, and I spotted this recent purchase. This verse reminded me of the story I told you last week about a time that I was really sick. My comfort was in knowing that I can trust in God, because He was working it all out for my good.

I worked on this card hoping and praying that one day, I'll be able to share it and bless someone.

This mountain scene stamp is a one from a company that went out of business that I pull out every now and then. The company was called Visual Image Printery. The verse is one that I got from Hobby Lobby from Stampabilities. It was colored with Prismacolor pencils and blended with a colorless blender pencil.

I don't really know what I was expecting when I asked for your "presents". Actually I was a little embarrassed when I read it later. But I am floored, honored, and impressed by your vocabulary and your "poetic" language... Very often in this life we don't get accolades for doing what we do, and even less for being who we are. I'm thankful that you can see me for who I am. I'm blessed that you all took the time to bless me over the past few days. I wish I could express it accurately. "My cup runneth over*" I did what I know how to do and I made a card last night.

I said I was putting myself on a leave from the blog so I'm going to keep this short. I just wanted to thank you!!!

P.S. My computer got a nasty virus and died last night. I was searching for words to the song called "I Choose Joy" and I think I got it from one of the sites that came up in the search engine. I've got to get it fixed ASAP! At least we have a back up. All my pictures are backed up, I think, so it isn't a tragedy except I can't get online as easily---that might not be a bad thing either. I don't have time to be on the computer because I'm doing deep cleaning this week, getting ready for the holidays and company. The Boy is chomping at the bit to decorate, but my motto is, "We don't decorate dirt!" so we have to clean clean first.

We saw Twilight this morning and I won't give anything away but I would go again to see it right now if I could get away with it.

I'm going back to work, but if anybody asks, I wasn't here ok? That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Tulips and Friends

I'm going to show you the card first because I have a lot of talking to do to make up for not blogging for a whole week.

The tulip image on this card is the same one I showed you the other day, (well that was last week wasn't it?), on this card. This time I drew in the stems instead of trying to stamp them. I like this look better. I also didn't include any leaves. The leaves I used last time weren't tulip leaves but I tried to make them work. This looks better to me. My intention was to color the flowers and paint the background, but that didn't work out so well. I wasn't satisfied with the first set of tulips that I had stamped on the card stock so I turned it over and stamped on this side not realizing that by wetting the paper with the paint, the stamped images on the back would show thru. So I had to cut out the flowers and stems. I used this background paper with a similar look that I was going for with the paint.

There are so many reasons why I haven't blogged in a few days. ... here's the condensed version.

• Michael and I sang at a Banquet on Saturday night, so there was the preparation for that. I would compare my singing since I got my voice back to a former runner who only runs once a year. We need to do something about that.
• We went downtown to the CNN building on Sunday afternoon for dinner, sat in traffic. ...hmmm next time we'll figure out what time the Falcon's game is going to get out before we leave.
• Monday and Tuesday the kids were home from school. They had Columbus day and then a teacher work day, so I was doing the mom thang running people here and there.
• On Wednesday it felt like Monday since the kids finally went back to school. I did some work for Hero Arts and then spent the entire day hunting the internet for facts about the presidential candidates or talking on the phone to people about the election. In between all that, I went all the way to the local doctor's office to have my blood drawn and they didn't have the paper work from the dermatologist's office. I was told that I might have to wait an hour or so or it might be better if I come back tomorrow. It didn't happen on Thursday either.
• Thursday was another busy day. I managed to make or finish that card in the morning. I took pictures and got ready to blog about it. I usually help out at the Other Boy's school on Thursday for an hour or two so my plan was to blog when I returned home. At the school, I made copies and laminated and as soon as I got in the car to leave his school, I got an urgent call from my husband that there was an emergency at The Boy's school. I didn't hear my phone while I was in the building so they called him at work. Thank goodness the schools are right next to each other. Since my car was blocked by all the school busses, I walked (almost ran) over to his school to find him sitting in the office with a cut over his eye, just under the eyebrow. So we headed over to the Emergency room where they gave him 4 stitches. We returned home just in time to leave again for The other Boy's basketball evaluations. When I got home from that I thought about blogging again until I realized that it was Thursday and it was 9:00pm. I only have two shows that I watch on any evening on a regular basis and Grey's Anatomy is one. (I'm not sure I like a couple of the story lines this year.)
• But anyway, that brings us to today, Friday morning... and I'm exhausted! I was supposed to join my husband at an elementary school for a time of reading to the kids and it's all I can do to sit at this computer today. I still have to go to Atlanta to have my blood drawn at my dermatologists office. They are monitoring my white cell counts and I think they are checking my liver too to make sure this medicine is helping and not hurting. NO migraines this week. I've had headaches, but not bad.

So there you have it. I'm going to avoid talking about the elections for one day. My brain is hurting. I have something to say and I'm trying to figure out the best way to do that. But not today... I'll warn you if I decide to blog about it. OK?

ETA: I wanted to add a little tidbit. My son's stitches is a first for us as a family. 21 years of parenting and 5 kids and this is the first set of stitches, can you believe that? This kid has never even had a cavity filled so when I told him they would numb him so that it wouldn't hurt when they put the stitches in he gave me a "does not compute"look. He handled it like the tough guy he is. The worse part of all this for him is that he can't play in PE today.(??) They are learning football and today is the last day to play football before they go on to another sport. Personally, I'm glad it's the last day, because my neighbor's kid broke his jaw a couple of weeks ago. They are not tackling each other but just like my boy, he and another kid were going for the ball at the same time when they collided.

Joyful, patient, and faithful

Long week. I'm glad that it's over. I'm not a perfectionist, but sometimes I wish I could always get everything right. My big pet peeve is wasting time so any lesson that needs to be learned more than once, in my opinion, is a waste of time. For instance, this morning, I spent the morning and the last few days wallowing....



It's been a long week, doctor and biopsy, teachers and conferences, conventions and speeches, and lots of other things to get me down.
I hadn't made a card all week! I practically forced myself to go and make a card on my finally-cleaned-off-desktop. I eventually made 4 cards --and now my desk top is a mess again, LOL! But it's all good... This is the one I decided I needed to make for myself. I love it that scripture, whether in the Bible or on the face of a stamp, is so encouraging. This stamp was sent to me by Deb a while back.

Why do I do this to myself? Eventually, while talking to Dawn, I realized what my problem was. Instead of counting my blessings, I've been reflecting on or replaying the yucky things (you know, wallowing) that have been happening. God is in control. This verse helped me see that...

1. I do have hope that God is going to work everything out because He is in control.... So, I can be joyful. Choosing Joy!
2. My afflictions aren't horrible, there are many people going through a whole lot worse, nevertheless, I should be patient because I know that God is going to work everything out, because He is in control....
3. I haven't been faithful to pray specifically for those things that have been bothering me. I've been praying, and praying for healing and praying for others. But I haven't asked God to give me wisdom about my situation, I need peace and patience too. But, I can fix this... right now! Still, God is in control and he is going to work everything out.

Making this card helped me, but, now I'll send it to encourage someone else. I do hope your weekend is blessed. I'll be choosing joy... Jacki

September Birthdays

I have a lot of September birthdays in my world, so I'm going to be making birthday cards for the next several posts. Here's on that I put together recently. I colored this when I did this one and this one. I guess it's been sitting on my desk for a while. It's amazing the things I find when I clean up that desk! I am going in again to attempt to totally clean it off. The problem is I keep finding things that completely shut down the "clean up" mode and start "create" mode. I'm going to try to do both today, I hope...

True Friends

I never get tired of using this (Stampabilities) saying, but this is the first time I thought to pair it with a footprints(Hambo) stamp! The hands are doing the sign for "Friend".
I also have the sign for "I Love You" stamped on the inside. (both Sarasota Stamps)

I've been thinking a lot about my friends and how blessed I am by them. I get so busy sometimes I think about them but don't always let them know it. I'm going to do another round of "sending" cards this week.

Susan T. of smARTworks did a whole post yesterday about these words that I said . Evidently I inspired her. What an honor! I do hope that my words will encourage and inspire, but I've been quoted on a stamp*! How cool is that? How cool is the timing of it all too! Check out her blog post.

I've talked about that idea on a couple of occasions, but the first time was after someone blessed me with with encouragement (way back in October). The other time I remember saying something similar was when I talked about the cashier at Walmart here. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

After the whole surgery deal and I mentioned online that all went well and better than expected, I got to thinking about what it was that made the experience a good one. I came to the conclusion that it was just a series of small experiences. One of those positive experiences was provided by the pre-op nurse who was not only thorough, but everything about her was calming. Although I don't remember much after that because of the nice drugs they gave me, evidently each person did their job in a professional way. As I sat and thought about this, and remembered my mission to acknowledge those who bless me, I was trying to come up with something small that could make for them. Because I was stuck upstairs at this point, I mentally surveyed my stamp collection. I decided that I didn't have the perfect stamp and that I would probably have to computer generate the words. When the mail arrived that day, I received this card from Susan with the (perfect sentiment) stamp that she says was inspired by me. So not only have I been quoted on a stamp, but it arrived at the perfect time!
So for my pre-op nurse and all involved, I made cards the size of ATCs. I'm hoping that they will be encouraged by them. I want them to understand that their job well done was appreciated by me. The neat thing is that I got a thank you card from all of them the other day, so at least I know how many people were involved and I have all their names.


Be a blessing to someone today! I've already been blessed by two friends this morning. Dawn came to see me again and my neighbor came to help me with something too! God is good!

Spring Fever Challenge Day 3

Purple, Tulips, and Joy!


Here are Denise's rules for today's cards. This was a little more challenging for me today but it all came together when I looked thru my stash and found this printed card stock complete with matching die cuts.


**Day 3 Challenge Rules** Today you get to make a card that doesn't fold in half....it is what I like to call a Funky Fold.


1) It can be any size card but can not fold in half
2) It must be decorated on the inside and outside
3) You must spell out a word using stickers, thickers, die cuts or alphabet stamps
4) It has to have polka dots. The prize going into the basket today is an assortment of K and Company pattern papers (my fav) and some DCWV chipboard (another fav of mine).


I made the card base from the first print. 5 1/2" x 12"

Pattern number two ( polka dots) was glued to the front panels.

Die cut letters and numbers.

The third pattern was cut and glued on the inside panels.

Another Rainy Day Friend and ...

another "pretty amazing" flower!


I was in a "change-it-up" mood last night and decided that I needed a round card instead if the typical rectangle. This is about a 4 inch circle, because it fits into a regular A2 envelope.


This is the card started during my coloring class earlier this week. When I prepared for the coloring class, I designed and assembled the cards with the exception of the sentiment. We were to color during class, and then they could go home and add the finishing touches. I actually designed this card to have a sentiment so the ladies were given two possible sentiments. Neither seemed appropriate for my purpose today. I have a couple more to color and assemble so I'm sure at least one of them will be made as designed... maybe.

I'm really proud of myself, because I actually mailed several cards today. I don't know why that is such a hard struggle for me... actually I do know why, but I'm in the process of getting better organized so that I'll have a specific spot for writing and sending cards. I'm just happy that I managed to get a few mailed today. I have many more to do....

Rainy Day Friend...

More rain today...all day. I had intentions of doing a tutorial, but it was too dark in here. Now the sun's out, but I don't have time to do it.



I made this card instead. I've actually done a lot of coloring over the last few days. I just have to turn them into cards...
I saw this stamp over at The Stampbuzz last week and for some reason I had to have it! I stamped the image twice, colored, cut out and used Pop Dots to attach the second umbrella. Stampabilities makes the Charlie Brown and Snoopy stamp and the saying is by The Angel Company.

I've heard a reference to My Creative Classroom three times in the last couple of days? I'm trying to figure out if I may be able to teach my coloring classes there. If you have any insight, shoot me an email or leave me a comment please?

Miscellaneous Birthdays

I'll still trying to use stamps that I've not used in a while. Here is one from my Snoopy Collection. I collect Snoopy stamps, but I rarely use them. What up with that? This is also my favorite Happy Birthday stamp. I haven't used it in a little while either. I love it because it reminds me of my friend Staci's very precise handwriting.

This is a result of attempting to clean off my desk. The different components were created at different times. This one needs something subtle. Ribbon? a button? hmmm....

On a Personal Note: I don't think I'm going to be doing very much card making this week, but I still have lots of cards from my marathon card making session on Thursday. If I feel like blogging, I'm well stocked.

I'm armed with my list of tasks and I'm trying to work in large solid blocks of time this week. One major project each day. Other than that, the only thing I have scheduled for this week is my Bible Study one morning and a class one evening. I'm starting to feel like I'm running out of time before the surgery. I won't be able to recuperate properly looking at all this junk. "Encourage me" to get back to work if you see me online too much...

On a Personal Note: I got an email of concern from one of my online friends. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to post a prayer request and then disappear for a couple of days. We put the "b" in busy this weekend. Other than that, I'm fine. My condition is ongoing. I really need to be on medication, but I'm rebellious and I hate side effects so I avoid it until I can't deny that I need it or something. I know once I find a good dermatologist, they will put me on a course of Prednisone. The problem with the Prednisone is it really does alter my personality a little. I'm a little more aggressive and cranky. The last time I was on it I made these wild cards. On the other hand, I may get a lot of organizing done while I'm on it. I want to get the skin thing under control before the surgery. So much to do...

I'm hoping for a sunny morning so that I can take pictures of the mail boxes I made. One of them is very cupcake-y.

Here's another tip to lessen the waste and weight of your cards. I always have 1/4 in strips left over from cutting my background cardstock. Sometimes I use them instead of using a full piece of cardstock to create the look of a mat as I did on this last card.




We have a snow day here (nothing sticking). I have new stamps from SU and Cornish Heritage Farms, so I'm going to play. I just might be back with more cards today.

A Daring Adventure

Somebody is celebrating a birthday at our house! I used this saying because I couldn't have imagined the adventure we took together. We met over 30 years ago. We've been together as a couple for 25, we've moved 6 or 7 times( I don't count anymore), we've had 5 kids, two of them all grown up... Who knew??

The saying stamp, by Artist Kathy Davis, also has a butterfly on the left. I covered it(the butterfly) with tape when I inked this stamp and removed the tape before stamping.

I'm just cleaning off my desk. I really like this stamp. I colored it and started working on assembling a simple card back when I made these.

On a personal note:

Everybody is at HOME! Yeah!!! The trip home was not without an adventure. My oldest daughter got dropped off at the airport only to realize that her flight was cancelled. She called my friend, and Tanya came back to get her and drove her all the way to Grand Rapids to catch a flight from there. Grand Rapids is approximately an hour away from the other airport. Tanya is an angel!!! The Atlanta airport was so busy, that they had to sit on the ground for about a half hour waiting for a gate to open. It seemed like sooo much longer than that. We also went to the Thankgiving celebration at my husbands job before going to the airport so I was dressed for that and not for comfort. ;)

The girls and I are headed to the movies to see This Christmas this morning and then back home to finish cleaning and start cooking. Our friends will be here later this afternoon! My cup runneth over..... I'll post some family pictures tomorrow. Have a blessed Thanksgiving!!!!
